ANATOLIAN rock band Kurtulan Ekspres (Escaper Express) played to a packed venue in the capital on Friday last week.

Performing with new soloist Yusuf Uğurer, the group performed popular numbers by Barış Manço and Cem Karaca, much to the enjoyment of the crowd at Barfly in Lefkoşa’s historic walled quarter.

The group was formed in 1972 and backed Turkish rock legend Barış Manço until his death in 1999, then Cem Karaca, another prominent figure in the Anatolian rock movement.

Kurtulan Ekspres, which usually features bass guitarist Ahmet Güvenç, Sefa Ulaştır on drums, keyboardist Bülent Güven and Akın Eldeson on electric guitar, invited bar owner and local rocker Arda Gündüz to join the group during a three-hour set.
