A RECORD-breaking 17,180TL raised by the annual “Chilly Dippers” New Year’s Day swim was presented to the Help Those With Cancer Association (Tulips) on Wednesday. Six of 15 sponsored swimmers who dared the sea at Lapta’s Fly Inn witnessed the presentation of a cheque for the money in a ceremony that was also attended by Tulips founding chairman Raziye Kocaismail.

“I am both delighted and shocked by the amount raised by the brave swimmers,” said Mrs Kocaismail.

Each of the swimmers at the ceremony were presented with a certificate for their achievement along with a silk-covered coaster. The annual swim, previously hosted at Kervansaray, was widely expected to top last year’s 9,558TL. Its organiser of two years, Jackie Pennington, told Cyprus Today: “To see what we have achieved over the years that this swim has taken place is quite impressive. We hope to keep increasing the amount raised each year but we need to recruit more people to take part.” The swim raised 5,453TL in 2014 and 8,347TL in 2015 in addition to the 9,558TL for the last day of 2016. Thanking Akpınar Patisserie and Atakara Supermarket for their contributions, former Tulips representatives Sue Tilt and Carole King, who also attended the ceremony, said: “What an amazing achievement. Our appreciation must also extend to all the sponsors of swimmers who so generously donated money.”
