A SLICK entertaining comedy about a couple of conmen in downtown LA. Be warned: not everything is what it seems. The audience also gets taken for a ride in this movie.
In a casino John C Reilly spots youthful Diego Luna trying clumsily to pull a scam on a waitress. He arrests the kid and leads him away in handcuffs.
But Reilly is not a cop. He is an experienced conman who needs an assistant. He teaches the young man various tricks of the trade and they embark on a swindle involving a forger and a collectible and valuable fake banknote.
The pair are innately devious and mistrust each other. Also involved in the shenanigans is Reilly’s sexy sister Maggie Gyllenhaal who runs the hotel where the scam will operate.
In 2004, Gregory Jacobs made his debut as director and co-wrote the script with producer Steven Soderbergh. George Clooney’s production company bankrolled the movie. It’s a reasonably faithful remake of an acclaimed Argentinian film, The Nine Queens.
Empire magazine called it: “A light-hearted parlour game. It leads its willing audience a merry dance, leaving them dizzy and breathless with the endless reversals. A solidly entertaining ride.”
