A COLOURFUL fantasy in which modern New Yorkers battle an army of the dead. Disney studio’s bold effort to compete with Tolkien-style adventures was a modest box office success.
It cost $150 million to make and made a profit of $65 million. Worth a peek. Nerdy physics student Dave Stutler, alias Jay Baruchel, is told by immortal sorcerer Balthazar Blake, played by Nicolas Cage, that he is the descendant of ancient Celtic magician Merlin.
His destiny is to lead the fight against evil wizard Maxim Horvath, the sinister Alfred Molina, who has escaped from imprisonment in a ceramic vase and plans to take over the world. Dave gets a few lessons in magic and a dress rehearsal and then takes on Horvath’s army of the dead in the streets of Manhattan. Dragons spit flames in Chinatown and a stone eagle on the Chrysler Building comes to life and joins the fun.
Directed by Jon Turteltaub in 2010 from a script by Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard and Matt Lopez. Based loosely on a famous poem by German author Goethe in 1797.
