A SCREWBALL comedy thriller that remorselessly takes the mickey out of conventional whodunits.

An accomplished film noir that delighted the critics in 2005.

Robert Downey Jr is petty thief turned actor Harry Lockhart, who is shown the ropes of police work in LA by private eye “Gay” Perry, alias Val Kilmer.

Harry is a born loser who also gets tips on acting from old girlfriend Harmony Faith Lane, a leggy minor actress played by Michelle Monaghan. Their ensemble acting is terrific.

Murders just keep happening willy nilly. The first body turns up in Harry’s shower and other misfortunes include Harry hanging on to a coffin dangling over a freeway bridge.

Harry nudges the action along with a laidback commentary: “Don’t worry. I saw Lord of the Rings and I’m not going to end this 17 times.”

First-time director-writer Shane Black demonstrated his mastery of the conventional thriller genre. He was screenwriter for Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout. Here he mercilessly sends up such thrillers.

Radio Times called it: “A nudge-nudge, wink-wink crime comedy. This quirky noir still packs more heat than your average 1980s action hero.”
