A SENTIMENTAL comedy about an ornery old rascal who organises his funeral while he is still alive so that he can enjoy it and get value for money. It’s hokey fun.

In backwoods Tennessee, in the ‘30s, old-timer Felix Bush, alias Robert Duvall, comes down from the hills and plans his farewell shindig with hard-up funeral director Frank Quinn, alias Bill Murray.

Bush quit town 40 years earlier and has lived in a shack with a mule, a shotgun and a guilty secret. He left town in a rush after an unexplained housefire.

Bush meets up with an old girlfriend Mattie Darrow, played by Sissy Spacek. Terrific performances by these three seasoned actors.

Old scores are settled, secrets unravelled and this movie ambles entertainingly towards a somewhat trite climax.

Directed by former cinematographer Aaron Schneider from a script by Chris Provenzano and C Gaby Mitchell.

Critic Roger Ebert called it: “A genre piece for character actors.

“Duvall is a sly old twinkler, and Murray would take the bills out of your billfold before screwing you in. All of this is just plain enjoyable.”
