Grumpy Old Men 8.15pm beIN Movies Comedy
ANOTHER chance to see one of the great comedy double-acts. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau made nine movies together and this is a predictable 1993 tale about two old-timers competing for an attractive neighbour. Not vintage but has flashes of the old magic of The Odd Couple.
Max, alias Matthau, and John played by Lemmon have been neighbours for half a century in a snowbound small town in Minnesota. Once friends, they fell out years ago and their feud hots up when dishy Ann Margret moves into the neighbourhood and takes an unlikely interest in them.
The banter is amusing and the rivalry intensifies when they go ice fishing together in adjacent shacks on a frozen lake. Another old-timer, Burgess Meredith, turns in an amusing performance.
Directed by Donald Petrie from a script by Mark Steven Johnson, who lacked the flair of Billy Wilder or Neil Simon.
Radio Times said: “The chemistry between the two stars is irresistible and they are matched by an equally strong supporting cast. This engaging comedy marked the seventh screen collaboration of one of the all-time great comedy partnerships.”
