A top neurosurgeon’s hands are mangled in a car crash as he texts at the wheel. To remake his life, he travels to Kathmandu and studies occult realities with the Ancient One, a shaven-headed monk played by Tilda Swinton. He becomes one of the world’s leading sorcerers.
Doctor Strange is Brit Benedict Cumberbatch, who adds a New York accent to the intellectual arrogance of his Sherlock Holmes on television.
The sorcerer combats evil Kaecilius, alias charismatic Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen whose ambition is to lead the world into Hell.
Strange’s bemused girlfriend Christine is played by Rachel McAdams.
Oscar nominated for Visual Effects and directed by Scott Derrickson from a script by Jon Spaihts. From today, Oscar-rated movies are screened on Channel 1 until March 5. This celebrates the Academy Awards on March 4.
