The Naked Gun 6.45pm beIN Movies Comedy

THIS hilarious welter of slapstick humour is the antidote to humdrum cops and robbers flicks. Inspector Frank Drebin alias poker-faced Leslie Nielsen, saves the visiting Queen of England from assassination by master criminal Ricardo Montalban at a baseball game in Los Angeles.

Writer director David Zucker in 1988 scored a boxoffice smash hit with Drebin, the funniest and most accident-prone sleuth since Peter Sellers played French Inspector Clouseau a quarter of a century earlier. The Naked Gun cost $12 million to make and took almost $80 million at the box-office. This Drebin hoot was inspired by an old straight-faced TV cop series Police Squad and spawned two movie sequels.

Watch out for one of Drebin’s sidekicks, the accidentprone detective Nordberg, alias OJ Simpson.

This former American football star was later charged with the murder of his ex-wife and friend but notoriously acquitted. The equally accident-prone OJ was released from jail three months ago after serving nine years for kidnapping and armed robbery.

Empire movie magazine called it: “A brilliantly irreverent comedy overflowing with quite extraordinary levels of absurdity. Nielsen’s deadpan face is the catalyst to an explosive chain reaction of hilarity.”
