THIS 2004 remake of a classic psychological thriller is a rarity. Critics say this remake is better than it’s much praised predecessor.

In John Frankenheimer’ s original 1962 movie, Commies brainwashed American PoWs in Korea, and turned one into an assassin. This time out, international conglomerates use brain implants to turn GIs into unwitting killers.

Denzel Washington plays Major Ben Marco tormented by dreams of what really happened when their platoon was captured in the Gulf War. He doubts the reality of events that made Sergeant Raymond Shaw, alias Liev Schreiber, a national hero now running for Vice-President of America. Other survivors of the Gulf War incident are having similar nightmares and doubts.

Behind the scenes, Shaw’s mother, a powerful senator played by Meryl Streep is a sinister puppet master. Streep is on killer form and steals the acting honours, just as Angela Lansbury did earlier in the same role.

Directed by Jonathan Demme from the original novel by Richard Condon.
