Driver, 38, dies in accident after losing control of car

A MAN died after losing control of his car on the Çamlıbel-Yılmazköy road on Saturday night, police said.

Ahmet Altındağlı, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by paramedics. His vehicle had gone off the road at around 11pm, coming to a stop on its side.

The funeral of Mr Altındağlı, who was married with one child, took place in Lefkoşa on Monday. Police said they were investigat­ing the cause of the incident.

In other accidents this week, a driver had to be freed from her car by firefighte­rs and police officers after crashing into a shop in Dikmen on Monday.

The accident occurred when Şaziye Şanlıkol, 26, lost control and ploughed into the front of a boutique, causing a wall to partially collapse on to her vehicle. She was taken by ambulance to Lefkoşa State Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The car was towed away after policemen from Boğazköy took measuremen­ts from the crash scene.

Meanwhile police figures showed that one person died and 15 others were injured in 55 accidents that took place in the seven-day period to Sunday. Of these accidents, 22 took place in the Lefkoşa region, 17 in Girne, seven in Gazimağusa, six in Güzelyurt and three in İskele. Damage sustained to vehicles was put at around 330,000TL.

Roadside spot checks also saw a total of 5,046 drivers stopped by police, 417 of whom were reported for a variety of offences, including speeding (71), failing to obey road signs (64) and driving while talking on a mobile phone (55).
