IF YOU enjoyed those old space operas about Starship Enterprise, put your feet up and savour this 2009 remake. Dedicated Trekkies might disagree but most critics said this re-launch of those ‘60s sci-fi adventures was better than ever.
This action-packed prequel shows how Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty etc first met.
Using digital technology, this was director JJ Abrams’s $150 million attempt to turn an old franchise into a new money-spinner.
It worked and this movie took $385 million at the boxoffice. Another successful sequel Star Trek Into Darkness was released in 2013.
Chris Pine has replaced William Shatner as Captain Kirk and we learn the secret of his lifelong friendship with Spock, the pointy-eared Vulcan, now played by Zachary Quinto. Through the miracle of time travel, Quinto comes face-to-face with the original Spock, alias Leonard Nimoy.
The villain here is Eric Bana, who once played The Hulk, and is so dastardly he has no regrets about zapping a planet on duff information.
Empire magazine said: “The most exhilarating Trek to date. If this can boldly go on to seek out ideas to match its speed and style, a franchise is reborn.”
