Churchill 8pm beIN Movies Premier

A CONTROVERSIAL revisionist study of Britain’s war leader Winston Churchill, who in 1939 inspired the nation in the fight against Nazi Germany — “we will never surrender!” Four years later, the tide of battle had changed and so had Winston.

In June 1944, the Allies’ massive invasion force Operation Overlord was poised to invade France. Seventyyear-old Chuchill, worn down by the struggle, predicted slaughter on the Normandy beaches.

He was haunted by memories of the First World War fiasco at Gallipoli, when he launched an invasion of Turkey that left 44,000 Allied soldiers dead on the foreshore.

Churchill, brilliantly played by Brian Cox, paraded his doubts before the Allied C-in-C Eisenhower, alias John Slattery, and even King George VI, played by James Purefoy. Winston’s redoubtable wife Clementine, alias Miranda Richardson, cautioned: “Brooke and Eisenhower and Monty are fighting this war and you just keep getting in their way.”

For an older generation this maybe a startling new take on Churchill. Directed by Jonathan Tepiltzky in 2017 from a script by Alex von Tunzelmann.

Radio Times said: “Geared around a magnificent performance from Cox, this heartfelt drama skilfully positioned around one man’s self-doubt, depression and destiny hits all the right notes.”
