A GRUESOME plot is the main obstacle to enjoying this 2007 musical. Johnny Depp mesmerises as the barber who gives the ultimate in close shaves.
Sweeney cuts his customers’ throats and slides them down a chute to the shop downstairs where his accomplice Helena Bonham Carter turns them into tasty meat pies for public consumption.
Sweeney is just a wronged lad, getting his own back on conspirators, notably crooked judge Alan Rickman, who sent him to the 19th century penal colony in Australia.
In the young man’s absence Rickman and his cronies ruined the lives of his family.
Sweeney sounds almost reasonable, if you put it like that.
Johnny and Helena do all their own singing, but this is not a song-fest for the squeamish. Director Tim Burton has turned Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway show into a powerful film noir.
Critic Roger Ebert said: “The bloodiest musical in film history, and it isn’t a jolly romp, either, but a dark revenge tragedy with heartbreak, mayhem and bloody good meat pies. Contains a great deal of humor, macabre, to be sure.”
