Friends and family pay tribute to expats

- By ANNE CANALP

TWO well-known Girne area expats were laid to rest at funerals this week.

A service was conducted by Rev Roy Symons at Girne’s New British Cemetery on Tuesday for Ruth Smith, who died on February 10 at the age of 97.

She was the mother of estate agent Ian Smith, whose wife, Linda, said: “It was a simple, sincere and heartfelt service attended by a huge number of friends and family. Despite the fact that many were not here, Ian could not believe his eyes and we were quite overwhelmed by the turn-out.”

Mourners gathered afterwards for a wake at the Grapevine Restaurant which included a collection for the Help Those With Cancer Association (Tulips).

The family thanked all who had attended the funeral and sent “kind messages”, saying: “Your thoughtfulness has been greatly appreciated.”

Local actors, artists and family gathered at GreenHill Cemetery on Thursday for the funeral of South African-born artist and long-time Kayalar resident Muriel Clutten, who died at home on February 15 at the age of 85.

Kyrenia Amateur Dramatic Society members joined the tribute to their fellow thespian which saw son Timothy deliver a moving eulogy during a service by Keith Lloyd.

Kads colleague Caroline Attwood said: “It was a lovely and diverse turn-out of over 40 including expat and Turkish Cypriot artists, actors, friends and family, which was testament to Muriel’s character.”
