Postal problem yet to be sorted
FURTHeR to Robert Smallwood’s letter (Cyprus Today, February 17) regarding the problems he has experienced in receiving post from the UK during the Christmas period, and his subsequent meeting with manager ahmet Dayı, i can confirm that i, too, have not received any Christmas and birthday post from family and friends, although sent by them both at the beginning of november and December 2017 respectively.
after several trips to my post box in girne i eventually gave up until January 29, when i received a very efficient telephone message from KKTC Posta stating that a fee of 45TL was owing for the rental on my post box. as a conscientious Brit i duly attended the post office and paid my bill. i then went and looked in my box, which again was empty. Fed up with this, i went back to the post office and asked over the counter why there was no post — emphasing that it was mostly from my family and i was upset that i had not received anything from them. One of the ladies answered me from behind the new glass-topped counter that the problem lay with İstanbul and that was where my post was. So no joy there.
While standing in the post office, it was interesting to note the mass of letters and parcels that were stored behind the new counters. How anyone in that office can find anything is beyond my comprehension.
Perhaps the Post Office who say they are understaffed could attract students, to be employed on a work experience placement, to help clear the backlog of post — which would encourage them to apply for vacancies in the postal service when budgets are finalised.
Well . . . just a thought! Rita Rose, Alsancak editor’s note: Cyprus Today is continuing to look into the postal problems — for the latest, and advice on addressing letters, turn to page 1.
