AN EXHILARATING if implausible chase movie. Mel Gibson is a nutcase cab driver, a fantasist who claims: “Just because you’re paranoid it don’t mean the bad guys ain’t out to get you.”
A formulaic psychological thriller by director Richard Donner in 1997 from a derivative script by Brian Helgeland.
Mel is a near basket-case, a damaged action hero as in Lethal Weapon. Julia Roberts is a leggy lawyer on the run, as in Pelican Brief. The villain is Doctor Jonas, Patrick Stewart in rimless specs, who brainwashes agents to become mindless assassins, as in The Manchurian Candidate. We’ve seen it before but it still fizzes along.
One of Mel’s doom-laden scenarios turns out to be true and he takes it on the lam with Julia, his confidante in the Justice Department. Julia’s dad, a prominent judge, was murdered years ago and, as you will soon suspect, Mel holds the key.
Assassinations begin, the authorities close in and armed agents slide down ropes from helicopters above Times Square to trap the runaways.
Critic Leonard Maltin said: “The script isn’t airtight, but it’s enjoyable and Gibson’s edgy performance is right on target.”
