Gattaca 9pm beIN Movies The Oscars
THIS thought-provoking thriller challenges ideas about how society ought to be structured in future. An entertaining but bleak preview of what might lie in store.
Tomorrow, the world will be governed by genetically modified people. Ordinary folk are second-class citizens. Is Gattaca a wakeup call or are the prophets of doom banging the same old drum? After Trump, anything seems possible! Society has two levels — the Valids, who are genetically programmed to be healthy with a higher IQ, and the subservient rest.
Ethan Hawke is a humble caretaker who dreams of becoming an astronaut. Jude Law is a Valid, crippled in a car crash. This disillusioned pair swap status to get Ethan on the space program.
It’s complicated because the scientist heading the project is murdered. Will investigator Alan Arkin discover that Ethan is a fake?
Gattaca in 1997 was the much-praised Hollywood debut of writer director Andrew Niccol from New Zealand.
Critic Roger Ebert called it: “One of the smartest and most provocative of science fiction films, a thriller with ideas. Intelligent and thrilling and also visually exciting. Its hero is a man who challenges the system.”
