Sleepy Hollow 8.50pm beIN Movies Oscars

AN EXHILARATING horror story about a headless horseman who terrorised the New England countryside in the 18th century.

An atmospheric ghost story creepily portraying a gory world of mist shrouded trees, deep shadows and things that go bump in the night.

This is director Tim Burton’s stunningly visual tribute to old Hammer movies.

It’s also his version of a famous American short story by Washington Irving.

In this 1999 chiller, Irving’s hero Ichabod Crane is now a police constable who scoffs at the belief that the ghost of a headless Hussar is lopping the heads off local worthies.

Johnny Depp is compelling as the scientific Ichabod who is converted to a belief in the supernatural only when he comes face to neck with the headless assassin.

Subplots involve buxom wenches, feisty squires and a wicked witch, with fine support performances from Michael Gambon, Christina Ricci, Michael Gough and that old Hammer stalwart Christopher Lee.

The movie won an Oscar for Art Direction and Empire magazine called it:” A richly imagined gothic horror story with Burton and Depp at their most gloriously eccentric.”
