Yenicami ‘thrash’ GAÜ Çetinkaya 4-0 in derby

Doğan Türk Birliği v Cihangir A DERBY match between Yenicami and GAÜ Çetinkaya which ended in a 4-0 “massacre” of the latter made football headlines this week.

Yenicami increased their points to 43 in the 20th week of the Super League, with the game played in very wet and cold conditions.

Sports commentato­rs said that the clash between the two Lefkoşa rivals in the Atatürk Sports stadium on Monday saw drama that ended with “a spectacula­r final result for Yenicami who put on an effective game”.

Yenicami’s John Ebuka lobbed the ball into the net in the 16th minute, with the second and third goals scored on the 35th and 67th minutes by Ünal Kaya.

The fourth goal came from John Okoli after overtaking the goalkeeper and shooting into the net.

There was more drama

in the 77th minute of the game when GAU Çetinkaya technical director Turan Altay loudly objected to a refereeing decision — and was asked to leave the game. Tension mounted even further when GAU Çetinkaya player Eko Barine also objected to decisions of the referee and he was shown a second yellow card which was then turned into a red one, with him being sent off.

In another important game, Lefkoşa’s Küçük Kaymaklı (Forest) playing away beat Binatlı 4-1, even though Binatlı was 1-0 ahead at one point on its own field.

Sports commentato­rs said Binatlı “suffered serious injury from this defeat” in a game which saw three red cards shown and Sercan Çoban suffering a chin injury which needed hospital treatment.

Gençlik Gücü (GG) meanwhile beat away team Ozanköy 4-2, with one commentato­r saying: “GG return to life”.

Home team Yalova drew 1-1 against Merit Alsancak Yeşilova, with one newspaper wryly observing: “They have got used to drawing.”

Mağusa Türk Gücü put on a “spectacula­r game for its fans” by the inner walls of the historic town, thrashing İskele’s Gençler Birliği 3-0.

Meanwhile, Türk Ocağı lost to away team Baf Ülkü Yurdu 2-0 in a rather disappoint­ing outcome for the home team. Cihangir lost 2-0 to away team Lefke.
