Why write a story?

-

AUTHOR and TRNC resident Robin Melhuish was this month’s guest speaker at the Friends of the TRNC Emergency Services (112) Afternoon Tea in Alsancak’s Black Olive Café.

The 68-year-old author of novels The Quiet Way, April Fool’s Day and All That Remains, gave a talk entitled “Why Write a Story?” to an audience of more than 30.

April Fool’s Day was later published as a “European edition” under the name All That Remains, with the central story based on “the uncovering of official lies about the capture of Himmler’s Nazi fortress leading to a hunt for proceeds from the biggest, undetected robbery in history.”

Funds raised from sales of cake and tea were boosted by a book sale conducted by Mr Melhuish to bring in a total of 520TL for the charity.

Brenda Plant of the 112 described having Mr Melhuish as this month’s speaker as “a lucky accident”.

“The talk was very well received and extremely interesting to us as most of us did not know of Mr Melhuish and were intrigued to hear about his stories,” she said.

“He began his talk by saying that everybody has a story as they have their own individual perspective regarding what they experience. To make the point, he handed everyone an image and asked about their thoughts, all of which turned out to be different.”
