THIS stunningly visual and thought-provoking Space saga is one of the greatest sci-fi epics. A must-see movie.
In 1968, director Stanley Kubrick co-wrote the script with famous sci-fi author Arthur C Clarke based on his story The Sentinel. Clarke suggests alien life forces have been in contact with humans for millions of years.
From our ape ancestors onwards, we have been nudged along by alien intelligence.
In modern times, we see an explorer on the moon uncovering a strange artefact emitting a radio signal that seems to come from the planet Jupiter. A space probe is launched to track the source, but the onboard computer Hal malfunctions and only one astronaut Keir Dullea survives to make it through “the space gate”. This fascinating essay deals with other dimensions of reality and reincarnation.
The special effects are mesmeric. Planets waltz to the music of Richard and Johann Strauss and these 19th century masters found their way into contemporary pop music charts. It was the winner of the Oscar for Special Effects.
The Rough Guide To Cult Movies called it: “The sci-fi movie against which all others are measured.”
