A HEARTWARMING tale about a car salesman who takes his autistic older brother on a life changing trip. This offbeat road movie won four major Oscars in 1988.
Tom Cruise convinces as Charlie Babbitt, a two-bit hustler peeved to be left out of his father’s $3 million will in favour of an older brother he had forgotten he had. He resentfully collects Raymond from an institution, determined to find a way to chisel him out of his inheritance and takes him on a trip to Las Vegas.
As the autistic brother, Dustin Hoffman showed insight and unconscious humour and won the Oscar for Best Actor. He prepared by working alongside autistic patients.
Rain Man was Best Picture and Barry Levinson was Best Director. The Screenplay by Ronald Bass and Barry Morrow won the fourth Oscar.
Cruise was unlucky to miss out on an award as the shallow car salesman who evolves into a more mature person and a loving brother.
The two stars initially had little faith in the movie. They called it “Two Schmucks in a Car”.
Radio Times said: “Hoffman’s savant is one of modern cinema’s great triumphs: believable, unsentimental, often hilarious. Director Barry Levinson handles the whole thing beautifully.”
