THIS all-time great Western changed the way we think about heroes of the Wild West. Clint Eastwood’s stark masterpiece won four Oscars in 1992 including Best Picture and Clint was Best Director.
Eastwood stars as William Munny, a hardbitten killer tempted out of retirement by the bounty offered by whores in Big Whiskey. One of the hookers had her face slashed by a pair of drunken cowboys and the girls want revenge.
The sadistic sheriff is Little Bill, alias Gene Hackman who brutally disposes of one bounty hunter, a dandified killer, known as English Bob, played by Richard Harris.
Munny arrives with his old sidekick Ned, alias Morgan Freeman, and a tough kid played by Jaimz Woolvett. The scene is set for an unforgettably violent climax.
Hackman was voted Best Supporting Actor and there was another Oscar for Joel Cox’s editing.
The guide to 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die called it: “A saga of melancholy beauty and unflinching moral, physical and historical realism. Acknowledged as a great anti-romantic Western, with greying gunmen, oppressed women, and the painful ugliness of death. As fine a piece of craftsmanship as one would expect from Eastwood who single-handedly kept the genre alive for 20 years.”
