THIS top-notch thriller was the movie debut in 2012 for a tough guy from Pulp Fiction. Ex-army sniper Jack Reacher is the hero of Lee Child’s novels, and Tom Cruise compellingly brings him to life.
In print, Reacher is 6ft 5ins of hell-raiser, but wee Tom Cruise makes up in intensity what he lacks in altitude.
We watch an unknown killer assemble his sniper rifle in a car park and cold bloodedly execute six passers-by, seemingly at random.
The cops arrest a former military sharpshooter whose fingerprint is at the scene. His response is: “Get me Jack Reacher!”
Loner Jack is a footloose vigilante who answers the call.
Assisted by a dishy lawyer, Rosamund Pike, and a weather-beaten gun expert, Robert Duvall, our hero unravels the frame-up.
The villain is a Russian gangster, alias movie director Werner Herzog. Lots of violence and an exciting car chase, directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
Total Film called it: “A superior thriller, with Cruise and McQuarrie slotting together like a bullet in a clip. Like Reacher on the firing range, the aim isn’t always true. The misses are fractional.”
