A CLASSIC comedy about a wannabe ladies man, who always goes to pieces around women, and gets advice on his love life from the ghost of movie legend Humphrey Bogart.
Woody Allen is nerdy film critic Allan Felix, whose apartment is plastered with posters of his hero. Bogey turns up during Allen’s fumbling attempts at seduction to advise on how to make out with the dames.
The results are sometimes hilarious, as when Woody, reeking of aftershave, accidentally trashes his apartment in an attempted display of nonchalance.
His best pal Tony Roberts and wife Diane Keaton try to find girls for him. Eventually Woody realises he really fancies his pal’s wife.
Bogey is lookalike Jerry Lacy, with the snap brim of his trilby pulled down and trench coat collar turned up.
This 1972 comedy is a Woody Allen classic directed by Herbert Ross, based on Woody’s 1969 stage play.
Critic Roger Ebert said: “As comedies go, this is a very funny one. Woody Allen is one of those rare comedians who understands that humour can be based on pathos as well as sadism. While the high-pressure comics overwhelm us with aggressive humour, Woody is off in the bathroom somewhere being attacked by a hairdryer.”
