Goods delivered to food kitchen
BAGS of food were donated to a soup kitchen in Lefkoşa last week to help feed 162 people.
The goods were delivered by members of the Akçay Culture and Arts Association to Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality’s “Sharing Kitchen”, located within the walled city’s Bandabuliya municipal market.
The products were to be used in the cooking of free hot dishes provided to elderly and disabled people unable to cook for themselves, as well as destitute refugee families.
The kitchen serves up one hot meal a day per person, either on the premises or via a “mealson-wheels” delivery service.
Ali Ecesoy and Seden Tunççağ, who are in charge of the kitchen, accepted the bags of donations and presented the Akçay Culture and Arts Association with certificates of appreciation in return.
One member of the group, İbrahim Baflı, performed a violin recital following the handover, which was “very well received”.
Mr Ecesoy and Ms Tunççağ stressed that the kitchen operated under “hygienic conditions” and that the meals distributed by it were prepared by “volunteer dietitians”.
The Sharing Kitchen, said to be the first of its kind in the TRNC, was set up by Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality in 2016. It receives financial support from the council and local businesses and individuals as well as “support and solidarity” from a number of establishments and civil society organisations.
