TRACKING ET
Super 8 is Browser’s pick for Thursday —
Super 8 8.30pm beIN Movies Action A SCI-FI thriller about a bunch of kids who discover an extra-terrestrial in their town. A cross between ET and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.
The youngsters are making a horror movie for a local festival and witness a spectacular train crash. From a shattered wagon a caged alien escapes and soon the town is full of government agents asking questions. Folks inexplicably disappear and all the town’s dogs do a runner. What the heck’s going on?
The military organise a cover-up, but the kids are hot on the trail.
These nerdy youngsters are led by 12-year-old Joel Courtney. The only girl in the crew is 14-year-old Elle Fanning who keeps her place because she drives her dad’s car.
In Ohio in 1978 this was writer-director JJ Abram’s tribute in 2011 to Steven Spielberg, who was persuaded to act as producer.
Overall, a gripping sci-fi thriller, although the ending is a touch schmaltzy.
Critic Leonard Maltin said: “It has the kind of heart and passion missing from many contemporary blockbusters, along with storytelling savvy and state-ofthe-art visual effects.
“Thoroughly entertaining.”
