Heartbeat shop back in business

- By YASEMIN GÜLPINAR

THE North Cyprus Cancer Charity Trust’s (NCCCT’s) Heartbeat shop is back in business after five weeks, thanks to donations to pay for repair materials and volunteer labour by an anonymous expat “Bob the builder”.

The shop in the old Girne Hospital — dubbed “North Cyprus’s alternative to Harrods” by NCCCT chairman Wendy Anderson — was forced to close on February 1 after bad weather was thought to have led to the collapse of ceilings, mould to grow on walls and some goods to be so badly damaged they had to be thrown away or donated to animal charities to use in kennels. However the problem turned out to be a burst pipe, and the shop — which pulls in an average 1,500TL a week for the charity — reopened after repairs on Monday.

Newly donated and original stock, including clothes, designer shoes and handbags, household items, books, DVDs and CDs, is on sale, starting from as little as 1TL, from 10am to 1pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and 9.30am to 12.30pm on Fridays. The NCCCT’s other shop, the Hut behind Girne post office, is open from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
