Postal problem stems from the top of the pile
I WAS surprised to read that the Royal Mail in the UK denies that post is tampered with there (Cyprus Today, March 3).
On three separate occasions I have had the address on official post altered. The last incident happened 12 months ago and I showed the envelope to a BRS member, who photographed it and said he would pursue the matter.
Obviously he meant in general terms and not for me in particular.
Each time, the clear window on the envelope has been slit with, I assume, a knife and the “Mersin 10” scribbled over in blue felt tip. The last time this happened my post was from the Inland Revenue. So post is definitely being targeted.
As regards the postal service here, chronic staff shortage is definitely an issue. Whenever I go into the post office there are parcels and letters everywhere. I cannot fault the staff themselves; they are always very helpful. But, reorganisation of resources is well overdue. It is no good criticising those at the bottom of the pile. The problem is at the top, where no-one seems to want to implement change.
Neither is it useful telling people to get a post box as a magical solution. I have a post box at Girne post office. I also use the Girne post code religiously. Does my post reach me without problem? No!
