Super League leaders Yenicami extend unbeaten run

-

K-PET Super League leaders Yenicami extended their unbeaten run to 14 games as they came from behind to thrash Lefkoşa rivals Küçük Kaymaklı 6-1 on Sunday.

John Ebuka Okoye was the hero of the day, netting four times for the home side and overtaking Küçük Kaymaklı’s Uğur Naci Gök in the fight for this season’s “golden boot”.

The Nigerian striker has now scored 29 times in 22 league games, three more than Gök.

His first of the match came in the 19th minute, which levelled the scores after the visitors had gone ahead with a header from Turgut Kaan after just three minutes.

Okoye then put Yenicami 2-1 up in the 28th minute, heading home a cross from Salih Güvensoy, before linking up with his team-mate again to secure his hat-trick in the 37th minute.

John Okoli then made it 4-1 for the Eagles before the break, with Okoye and Güvensoy wrapping up the result in the final minutes of the encounter.

The result, Yenicami’s 12th win from their last 14 league fixtures, moved them up on to 49 points. Küçük Kaymaklı are fifth on 37 points.

Yenicami’s closest rivals are now Doğan Türk Birliği — whom they face today — who moved up one place to second spot on 43 points, with a hard-earned 1-0 win away at Yalova.

Onyekachi Okafor, another Nigerian footballer plying his trade in the TRNC, scored the game’s only goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minute after Yalova’s Edis Sökmez handled the ball.

GAU Çetinkaya were left in third place in the standings following a 1-0 defeat away to Türk Ocağı Limasol in Monday night’s game, in Girne — a match that saw seven yellow cards.

Güzelyurt’s Binatlı also saw their title hopes take a dent, as they suffered a shock 2-0 home defeat at the hands of bottom side Ozanköy on Sunday.

Israel Iffeny Abia struck twice late in the game to give Ozanköy only their third victory of the season, although they remain in 16th and last place, on 14 points. Binatlı stay fourth on goal difference, with 37 points.

In the weekend’s other results, Gençlik Gücü eased their relegation fears with a comfortable 4-0 win over Yeni Boğaziçi at Lefkoşa’s Atatürk Stadium.

The win took Gençlik Gücü on to 26 points, five ahead of the bottom three. Yeni Boğaziçi remain second from last, on 18 points.

Mağusa Türk Gücü beat Lefke 2-1 while there were also wins for Merit Alsancak Yeşilova and Baf Ülkü Yurdu.
