LEGENDARY Brit director David Lean’s final film in 1984 was an inspired version of EM Forster’s classic novel. In this two-and-a-half-hour epic, Lean atmospherically captures the steamy, colonial bustle of 1920s India, when Brit expats uneasily lorded it over the natives.
In this mishmash of cultures, an impressionable young English woman, finely played by Judy Davis, claims she was sexually assaulted in the disorientating Marabar caves by her guide, the obsequious doctor Aziz alias Victor Banerjee. His trial becomes an impassioned cause célèbre.
Dame Peggy Ashcroft, as a wise old expat, guides us through these turbulent events and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Maurice Jarre’s musical score won another Oscar and perfectly complements the parades, elephants, chattering monkeys and breathtaking vistas.
Fine support from James Fox as an uppercrust Englishman and Alec Guinness as an Indian rabblerouser.
This is not quite as obviously epic as Dr Zhivago or Lawrence Of Arabia but is a worthy epitaph to David Lean.
Critic Roger Ebert said: “Lean makes India look like an amazing, beautiful place. One of the greatest screen adaptations I have ever seen.”
