Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me

CRITICS laughed and groaned at the crude humour of this second of three adventures of lecherous superhero Austin Powers.

These in-your-face sexist comedies were box office gold, making a net profit of $550 million! Sample what it’s all about.

Austin is a toothy James Bond from the ‘60s, whose arch rival is Dr Evil, a swinger who time travels in a penisshaped capsule. Mike Myers plays both roles and co-wrote. He takes the mickey out of Bond, but he’s really pro-Brit.

The plot is the doctor has stolen Austin’s mojo, which is Sixties-speak for his sex drive. Naturally, our hero wants it back. Crudity is interspersed with song and dance and lots of babes. Austin’s helpmate is Felicity Shagwell, alias Heather Graham. Nudge, wink!

Much falls flat, but if you don’t guffaw somewhere, check you still have a pulse. The cast includes Elizabeth Hurley, Robert Wagner, Rob Lowe, Michael York, Will Ferrell, Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello and Tim Robbins. Directed by Jay Roach in 1999.

Critic Leonard Maltin said: “More laughs than the original, and more than enough gross-out gags, though it’s still spotty.”
