Driver dies after being thrown from his car
A DRIVER who was not wearing a seatbelt died after being thrown from his car when it crashed into trees beside the GüzelyurtYuvacık road.
Adnan Konuguş, 45, was killed instantly in the crash, at about 9.50pm last Saturday.
Mr Konuguş, said to be a journalist on a magazine for retired İstanbul police officers, had travelled to the TRNC from Turkey four weeks ago to visit his wife and two sons in Yuvacık, where they work picking oranges, according to reports. The couple’s 21-year-old daughter is a student at Turkey’s Artvin University.
Elsewhere on the roads, two people were injured — one seriously — when an allegedly drunk driver crashed in Girne at around 7am last Saturday.
Police said Osman Çağlar Yıldırım, 23, was under the influence of alcohol and speeding when he lost control of his car and smashed into a tree alongside Mustafa Çağatay Caddesi.
Mr Yıldrım and his passenger, Tuğçe Sözer, 24, were taken to nearby Girne State Hospital. Ms Sözer, who suffered a broken neck in the crash, was later transferred to Lefkoşa State Hospital.
A DRIVER who crashed his car into a 10-metre-deep ditch took out a comprehensive insurance policy before reporting the accident, police said.
Onur Bağaş, 24, from Bursa, in Turkey, called police on Monday saying he had just crashed his Turkish-registered vehicle on the Hamitköy-Dikmen road.
However investigations revealed the car had left the road and overturned at 1.30am on Sunday with four teenage passengers inside, one of whom had already left the country.
The car was winched out of the ditch by crane and its driver is being investigated for providing false information.
