Phoenix Line Dancers founders prepare to go back to the Channel Islands

- By YASEMİN GÜLPINAR

THE Phoenix Line Dancers are “returning to the ashes” as the group’s expat founders prepare to go back to the Channel Islands.

Having lived in Alsancak for 15 years and now waiting to sell their İncesu home, Steve and Denise Bisson broke news of “the end of an era” to members of the group, some of whom were said to be in tears after nine years that have seen 200 of them dance at dozens of different venues and events ranging from traditional festivals to special occasions, including dance trips to Poland and Turkey.

Thanking all past and present members, Mr Bisson, 74, told Cyprus Today it had been a difficult decision to leave the TRNC, but said: “We are getting to the age where neither of us want to be left here alone and we therefore felt it time to get back to where three of our children will also be close to us.

“When we first came here after line dancing for three years in the UK, it took us three months to find out about the Kıbrıs Line Dance club which we belonged to until 2009 when we decided to form our own group. We became like a family and have danced at many events ranging from the Silk Cocoon Festival to the İnternational İskele Festival.

“We plan to continue with our dancing, which we are passionate about, and might rejoin our club in Guernsey, where we are from.”
