A HEART-warming emotional melodrama about a blind ex-soldier who plans to commit suicide after a final weekend on the razzle.
However, he gets involved with the problems of a teenage student and recovers his sense of purpose.
With a bravura performance Al Pacino won the 1993 Oscar for Best Actor as Vietnam veteran Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade.
Before he dons his dress uniform and loads his pistol to end it all in time honoured fashion, Frank dances an impromptu tango with a young woman — an intense experience.
His minder is Charlie Simms, alias Chris O’Donnell, a scholarship boy about to be expelled from a posh school for his part in a prank.
The other miscreants have decided to put all the blame on Charlie. This prompts a dramatic intervention by the Lieutenant Colonel at the school speech day. Rousing stuff.
Directed by Martin Brest in 1992 from a script by Bo Goldman.
Radio Times said: “This lengthy melodrama is kept vibrantly alive and out of the clutches of sickly sentimentality by a towering performance from Al Pacino.”
