Shooting tournament held in memory of late commander
A former commander of Turkish Cypriot freedom fighters was remembered at a shooting tournament held in his honour last Saturday, some two years after his death.
The second Hasan Kara Mehmet Tribute Sporting Tournament took place at an İskele Municipality shooting range and was jointly organised by the Freedom Fighters’ Commanders’ Association and Gazimağusa Hunting and Shooting Association.
Father-of-six Mr Mehmet was born in 1930 in Yedikonuk and became a well-known commander of freedom fighters during the intercommunal violence that broke out in Cyprus during the 1960s.

Speaking to Cyprus Today, Freedom Fighters’ Commanders’ Association chairman Gözkamaş Ergüneş said: “Hasan was an important figure in the national struggle of Turkish Cypriots and played an
important role in the formation of the TMT [Turkish Resistence Organisation] in 1958 and as a freedom fighter from 1963.
“The tournament went extremely well with 50 competitors taking part.”
