Alfie 9.15pm beIN Movies Comedy

A BREEZY and sexy comedy guaranteed to make you smile somewhere along the misogynist catwalk. A 2004 revamp of the amorous adventures of Cockney Casanova Alfie that propelled Michael Caine to stardom nearly 40 years earlier. Some critics claim this American remake was better than the original.

This time Jude Law plays the title role, as a randy London-born chauffeur in Manhattan, who laddishly chases everything in a skirt — single or married, including the wife of his best friend.

Modern New York women are more emancipated and independently minded than the downtrodden wenches Caine pursued in 1960s London when Women’s Lib was just getting started.

Alfie still makes numerous conquests but gets his comeuppance by being cast aside by stylish businesswoman Susan Sarandon and warm-hearted Marisa Tomei for whom Alfie has deeper feelings than he realises at the time. Alfie is a more forlorn figure than when Caine was strutting his macho stuff. He reflects on his conquest or otherwise in rueful asides.

Charles Shyer directed and co-wrote a sharp script with Elaine Pope.

Total Film said: “Jude Law has only gone and nailed it. A serial bedpost-notcher, a modern dandy fantasy with Alfie as the alpha-male every man secretly nurtures.”
