In 2007 actor Ben Affleck, older brother of Casey, made an impressive debut as director. Terrific performances all round, especially from Morgan Freeman as a tough police chief and Ed Harris as the hard-nosed cop in charge of the case. Amy Ryan convinces as the missing child’s mother, a coarse and inadequate junkie. This intelligent flick poses a moral dilemma. Private eye Casey thinks the missing child should be returned to her mom regardless, but his partner Michelle understands that the little girl might be better off with almost anyone else, unless it’s another druggie or a paedophile. Empire magazine called it: “A superior, haunting thriller of abduction, deception and ethical dilemma with a sobering ending.”
