ESCAPISTS of all ages should enjoy this visit to the fantasy land of Narnia where the lion Aslan leads talking animals in a mighty struggle against an evil witch who keeps her snowbound realm in a state of perpetual winter.
Sounds like a parable about climate change but CS Lewis’s original novel is more to do with saving civilisation from the blight of the Nazis.
This Disney adventure is a bit low key compared to Harry Potter or The Lord of The Rings. Good fun nevertheless. Four children, evacuated from the London blitz in World War Two, find their way into this magical land through a wardrobe in the house of an eccentric professor. The Pevensie kids are a bit hoity toity but accept their destiny to free this icebound world from the grip of a wicked witch, alias Tilda Swinton. The heroic lion Aslan is voiced by Liam Neeson.
Directed and co-scripted by Andrew Adamson in 2005. Winner of the Oscar for Best Make-up.
Radio Times said: “This ambitious, old-fashioned adaptation retains much of the magical allure of the popular children’s classic. Some plot lulls, but there’s still plenty to delight.”
