Pair to run as independent candidates

-

MAYORAL candidates in June 24 local elections will formally hand their applications to the Supreme Election Council on Monday for provisional announcement on Tuesday and official confirmation next Saturday.

Increased numbers of independent candidates have turned out this year and Girne is no exception.

Among them so far is Akın Akı, a 41year-old father of two who studied electronic engineering at Eastern Mediterranean University.

Well-known by many expat homeowners for his Akı Water and solar systems businesses, his electric conversion Morris Minor featured in Cyprus Today two years ago, when he said that there was no interest here in helping people to get free energy.

He said: “I am now working for a commercial 140kW project in the Karpaz. It is impossible to provide good quality systems for domestic owners as there are no government incentives.

“I feel that Girne is running out of time to fix itself and I want to do something good for my town.

“I also fear that Girne Municipality will experience similar problems to Lefkoşa if nothing is done.”

Building contractor Ömer Dalgakıran is also standing as an independent under the slogan “Knowledge, Experience, Willpower and Service”.

The 55-year-old graduate of İstanbul Technical University and former head of the Ozanköy Sports Club is married to a local teacher. Their two children are doctors.
