Disabled get creative

- By YASEMIN GÜLPINAR

ONE of the most popular street art and graffiti locations in Lefkoşa became a canvas for the Cyprus Turkish Orthopaedic Disabled People’s Association last weekend.

Fifteen members of the group gathered in Uray Sokak to paint shapes in various colours on a wall under the leadership of Turkish Cypriot artist Aslı Bolayır, who has been carrying out regular workshops for the association since 2015.

Speaking of the “energy” of those taking part in the event, Ms Bolayır said: “It was amazing to see how they were on the street expressing their thoughts and emotions through creativity and producing some- thing in solidarity while welcoming the involvement and interest of passers-by.

“They accept life as it is and showed with joy how creating and producing things can carry people a step forward. I sincerely congratulate them.”

Association head Günay Kibrit expressed his delight, saying: “Everyone was so happy and excited because we produced something that was a work of improvisation that will leave our signature on the wall.

“It was also great to have others supporting and helping us by joining in the artwork or handing us materials that we needed. We have been struggling so long to make a statement in the community and this was to show them that ‘we are here’.”
