Duo take doubles darts title
A TURKISH Cypriot was part of a squad that took championship honours for Turkey at an international athletics meeting.
Yiğitcan Hekimoğlu and his team-mates scored their victory in the men’s European Champion Clubs Cup senior track and field competition in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium last weekend.
Hekimoğlu, a Girne American University athlete, was part of the İstanbul-based Enka Sports Club squad which won eight of the weekend’s events and had top-three finishes in eight more.
However coach Celal Keleş said Hekimoğlu had been unable to race in the 4x100m relay because of a “minor foot problem” which he did not want to risk exacerbating ahead of important events in Romania and Bosnia this month.
The Turkish athletes finished the first day of the tournament with a 2.5-point lead but fell behind Portugal’s Sport Lisboa e Benfica on the second day before surging to a championship-winning 163.5 points by the close.
In the women’s competition, Enka notched up 164 points from 10 first places and nine top-three finishes, but were beaten overall by Sporting Clube de Portugal, with a two-point margin. THE final of the men’s darts doubles tournament ended with a championship win for the Mehmet Olgun and Fail Amcaoğlu duo at Jessic Bar in Karşıyaka.
Runners-up at the event last Thursday were John Swayne and Erkan Canbolat.
Speaking to CyprusToday, Carlsberg Winter Darts League acting chairman Nick Sinclair said: “The standard of darts was very high with a total of 32 players in 16 pairs taking part.
“In a breathtaking final, Mehmet and Fail won 3-0 in three straight sets to take the championship trophy.
“Mehmet also hit 180 in the final, which applause.
“It was excellent darts and we thank everyone who took part in the league.” drew much
