Lapta Lasses top cricket league
LAPTA Lasses topped the Creditwest Ladies Cricket League after victory over Girne Girlies in the latest round of the competition.
Batting first in the game on May 22 at Girne's Pia Bella ground, the Lasses — defeated by Doğanköy Darlings in the season's first game — built up what umpire Tom Shirley called a “mammoth” score of 108 runs.
Within the first three overs, captain Gina Mapp and Steph Routledge had smashed 46 runs, and the pair went on to notch up 74 before Girlies’ captain Lynn Holman caught Mapp off Sarah Sandford.
Next in was Julie Birch, whose free-scoring style was tempered when she hit her own wicket off Sandford and was then bowled by Sri Lankan Shiroma Pattiyage, although still scoring a respectable 16 runs.
Partner Annie McLoughlin was more circumspect, accumulating 21 without loss from their allotted six overs. Holman and Pattiyage opened in reply, adding 24 runs between them and leaving a daunting target of 85 for the final pairing of Linda Hurley and Sarah Sandford.
They set about the fightback, only for Hurley to be caught by Mapp off Routledge’s cunning, medium-paced bowling.
At the other end, Sandford also found it tough going until the last few overs when her scoring became increasingly free-flowing, leading to a team total of 62.
League organisers have invited would-be players to come along to women’s practice sessions at Pia Bella Stadium, where the next match takes place at 4.30pm on June 12.
“People who are interested are invited to go along and learn to play the game to keep fit and have fun. No previous experience or equipment is needed,” said a spokesman.
