Renowned professional singer holidays in TRNC
BRITISH soprano and TV presenter Justine Balmer said she “would be honoured” to perform in the TRNC following her first holiday in the country.
“I definitely plan on coming back,” she said when Cyprus Today caught up with her before her return to the UK for the release of a debut album. “It was a short, girlie break for some much-needed rest and recuperation,” said the Surreyborn singer, who performed for troops while fronting the Queen’s Division Big Band, as well as having a role on the big screen in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd.
In 2014, she performed for celebrities at the glitzy Inspiration Awards for Women in London. Previously a guest presenter for QVC and now a lifestyle expert on UK shopping channel Ideal World, she recalled her break in North Cyprus saying: “We were all blown away by the stunning coastline and the tranquillity. Everyone local couldn’t have been more helpful, especially the restaurant across from where we were staying in Esentepe — Tastefast — which has just opened.
“The owner, Binya Ameen Binya, was great fun and the food was excellent! Go visit!”
During her short stay at a villa, she visited Esentepe’s historic “hidden gem” of Antiphonitis Church and Alagadi beach.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t see any turtles, but maybe next time! We also drove along the coast to the tip to see more of the rugged coastline. “Our time there was too short — just a long weekend, but we definitely plan on coming back.”
She said that if offered the opportunity to perform at classical music events in Bellapais Abbey, she “would be honoured to take part . . . ”
The SimpleThing album exhibits unique twists to classical and pop songs, such as Sia’s Titanium, Keane’s SomewhereOnlyWeKnow and Coldplay’s FixYou.
It also features a duet with Classical Brit Award winners Blake.
The album, to be released in the autumn, is championed by Classic FM and will be available on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.
