RAUF DENKTAŞ HONOUR FOR HARRY FELLOWS MBE

-

THE annual meeting saw the BRS present its third Rauf Denktaş Award to former British Cemetery Committee chairman Harry Fellows MBE.

Previous recipients of the honour, which recognises services to the expat community, were former chief justice Taner Erginel in 2015 and Help Those with Cancer Association (Tulips) founding chairman Raziye Kocaismail in 2016. BRS chairman Danny Dugan said the “magnificent engraved silver salver” had been given to retired Royal Naval officer Mr Fellows for his service to Britons in the TRNC “in different guises over many years”.

“He retired to Cyprus in 1996 and first made his mark as a member of the TRNC Environmental Liaison Group.

“He has twice been chairman of the Anglo Turkish Association and is now their honorary vice-president. He is a past chairman of the Society of St Andrew’s Church and first joined the British Cemetery Committee in 1997, becoming their chairman the following year.

“Harry finally retired as chairman of the British Cemetery Committee in March . . . and is now looking forward to enjoying his new-found leisure time at his home in Karşıyaka.”

Mr Fellows said: “It is wonderful to be recognised, and I accept this honour on the basis of the success of the hardworking and devoted committee I have worked with.”
