A YEARLY clean-up of Boğaz picnic area produced 130 bin bags full of litter — and a plea by Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü for the public to stop turning the leisure facility into a rubbish dump.
Municipality staff collected the haul of rubbish from the Forestry Commission-controlled area last weekend before moving on to do the same on the bypass between Girne and Alsancak, which comes under the Highways Department. In addition to rubbish and weeds being cleared from the central reservation, roadside trees were also pruned and litter removed from where it had been thrown from passing vehicles.
“Some people have an unfortunate perception that they are entitled to dump anything they don’t want because our municipality staff will automatically pick it up”, said Mr Güngördü. “Visitors to the picnic site should use a plastic bag for their rubbish and that should then be put into dustbins which are provided for them to use. We also ask people to think twice before throwing litter out of their vehicles and to dispose of it properly.
“Awareness of the need to do this can be raised through education and we have previously distributed brochures about the issue with the objective that people will form a habit of not polluting, rather than the reverse.”
