Author launches novel in the UK

- By ANNE CANALP

A FORMER Karaman resident and retired teacher who set his first novel, the 2012 Kindle crime thriller Engulfed, in Cyprus has launched his seventh Harrogate detective novel, a compilation of cases, in the UK.

Malcolm Hollingdrake told Cyprus Today: “I’ve been busy with book signings and met up with [thriller writer] Lee Childs at the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate last month.”

He also had chance to meet up with visiting authors Nicci French, John Grisham and Val McDermid.

Mr Hollingdrake’s successful series features the character of DCI Cyril Bennett and was taken up by Bloodhound Books. Crossed Out, the sixth in the series was published in January followed by the June launch of the DCI Bennett Cases Books 1-3.

Now the 65-year-old author plans a new series of three more crime thrillers which will introduce a female detective as the lead character. He said: “I think of Cyprus often, but as the Eagles song says, ‘call somewhere paradise, kiss it goodbye’.”

“We bought a house in [Karaman] in 1989 two years after we arrived from teaching in Cairo but sold up and left six years later because of the development.

“I have many happy memories including driving a car out to Cyprus and back via a different route, which was quite an adventure.”

Mr Hollingdrake’s thrillers, including his Cyprus novel and a book of short stories, are available in Kindle or paperback via the Amazon website.
