A FASCINATING snapshot of a controversial gay American writer. The intellectual Truman Capote, witty darling of the New York cocktail set and author of Breakfast At Tiffany’s, researched the gruesome true story of two drifters who senselessly murdered a family in small town Kansas.
In 1959, Capote became fascinated by the crime. He attended the trial, got to know the killers personally and was present when they were executed. He waited six years before their final appeal was rejected and he could publish his bestseller In Cold Blood.
Capote was personally attracted to the younger killer, alias Clifton Collins Jr. It was an emotionally scarring experience.
As Capote, Philip Seymour Hoffman won the 2005 Oscar for Best Actor. Bennett Miller directs from a fine script by Dan Futterman.
This movie is not to be confused with Infamous which hit the screens a year later. In that version Brit Actor Toby Jones was also much praised for his portrayal of Capote. The two stories are basically the same.
The New Yorker called it: “The most absorbing film ever about a writer’s character — a mix of strength, guile, malice and mendacity.”
