AN ENTERTAINING comedy about the scandalous sex life of a candidate for the US Presidency. It’s based on a real life incumbent of the Oval Office, but it’s not the guy you’re thinking of. Donald’s turn will come. This is aimed at Bill Clinton who was President back in 2001.
John Travolta, paunchy and greying at the temples, is Arkansas Governor Jack Stanton, pilloried in the media for compulsive sexual infidelities including a passionate wingding with a hairdresser, involving taped telephone calls. His long suffering wife Susan, impeccably played by Emma Thompson, stands by her man through thick and thin.
Critics had no doubts we are really talking about Bill and Hillary Clinton and Bill’s much publicised dalliance with White House aide Monica Lewinsky. Sounds small beer compared to the alleged peccadilloes of today’s guy, but saucy fun nevertheless.
Brit actor Adrian Lester plays Stanton’s harassed agent Henry Burton, but the scene stealer is Kathy Bates as the future President’s strident hatchet woman.
Mike Nichols directed in 1998 from a script by Elaine May. Over two hours running time, but critics say this political satire never drags.
Empire magazine called it: “Slick, commercial and consistently entertaining. Spot on satire with pitch perfect performances and a colourful script.”
